At St George’s Preschool the staff have been trained in Emotion
Coaching. We believe that all emotions are valid and help children to
recognise and deal with emotions in a healthy and safe way.
Through emotion coaching the staff are helping children to become
more aware of their emotions and manage their own feelings to avoid
challenging behaviour. It entails validating children's emotions,
setting limits where appropriate and problem-solving with the child
to develop more effective behavioural strategies.
The emotion coaching techniques we use enable us to create a
positive learning environment for all by de-escalating situations when
behaviour is challenging. Emotion coaching provides a value-added
dimension to behaviour management strategies and creates
opportunities for longer-term solutions to children's well-being and
resilience. This is particularly important when preparing the
children for transition to school.
If you would like to know more about emotion coaching and how this
works in preschool, please speak to Mrs O’Mahony.
